Life here

An ordinary Tuesday.

The point of this place is not the swimming pool. It is that nothing on this page is something you have to organise.

A day

From about seven.

The pool is quiet in the morning. Some people swim; more of them walk in the shallow end, which is easier on the knees and does the same work.

Breakfast is served in the dining hall. So is lunch, so is tea, so is dinner — four meals a day, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and nobody has to think about what to cook or whether the vegetables have arrived.

The morning has a fitness session if you want one, and a yoga room if you would rather be quiet. The physiotherapist is on site. So is the Ayurvedic centre.

Afternoons are slower. The library takes the newspapers and keeps a shelf of periodicals. The games room has carrom, a snooker table, table tennis and cards, and by the second week you will know who takes the card table too seriously.

Somebody comes to collect the laundry. Somebody else has already made the bed and changed the linen. If the AC is making a noise, you mention it at the front desk and it stops making a noise.

In the evening people sit outside. There is music some days — properly run music therapy sessions, not a speaker in a corner.

At night there is a nurse on your floor. You will probably never need her. You will sleep better knowing where she is.

Dining

Four meals, and someone who knows what you can't eat.

Meals are served buffet-style in the dining hall — breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, every day.

If you have a condition that dictates what you eat, our dietitians prepare meals to match it. Not a plainer version of everybody else's food — food cooked for you, that tastes like food.

Room service runs round the clock. The service itself is included; what you order is charged. If you would rather eat in your own room at nine at night, that is not a special request.

Wellness

Facilities you will actually use.

  • Swimming pool — included. Water takes the weight off the joints, which is why it suits people whose knees have opinions.
  • Gym, with guided sessions daily — included. Guided is the important word. Equipment nobody shows you how to use is furniture.
  • Physiotherapy — group sessions included; one-to-one treatment charged. On site, so recovering from something does not mean a car journey three times a week.
  • Yoga room — included. Quiet, and used for that.
  • Ayurvedic centre — treatments charged. Traditional treatments, on campus.
  • Salon — charged. Because looking like yourself matters.
  • Dental clinic — the check-up is included; treatment is charged. On campus, beside the doctor's room.

Things to do

Something on, most days.

  • Music therapy — run properly, by people who know what they are doing
  • A library that takes the daily newspapers and keeps periodicals worth reading
  • Carrom, snooker, table tennis and cards in the games room

None of it is compulsory. Some of the best days here will be the ones where you read in your own chair and speak to nobody.

Everything taken care of

The list of things that stop being your problem.

  • Housekeeping — mopping, linen change and toilet cleaning weekly; a bin collection and a room visit every day; on demand, free, in an emergency
  • Laundry — collected from your room daily. Four pieces a day are included; beyond that, ₹50 a piece
  • Repairs — electrical, plumbing, the AC, the television. You report it; we fix it
  • Upkeep — painting, pest control, preventive maintenance, all of it
  • Waste — dealt with, scientifically and out of sight

The concierge desk

Pick up the phone and it is handled.

The front desk exists so that the administrative business of being alive does not eat your week.

  • Paying the phone bill
  • Government taxes and paperwork
  • Coordinating with hospitals and insurance companies
  • Arranging transport and travel
  • Booking flights, trains and transfers
  • Shopping, groceries and medicines
  • Film tickets and a table at a restaurant
